Giftedness – Intelligence Beyond the Norm

Identifying Giftedness

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

The identification of gifted individuals can be a complex process because giftedness doesn’t always present itself in obvious ways. Traditional methods, such as standardized tests and IQ scores, have been used to identify intellectual giftedness, with scores of 130 and above typically indicating exceptional ability. However, these tools often fail to capture creative, artistic, or leadership talents.

However, there are more better approaches to uncovering the quiet brilliance and identifying giftedness or gifted individuals. These includes but not limited to the following:

1. Observation

Look for signs of advanced thinking. Pay attention to students who demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a curiosity for learning. Professionals, such as psychologists or educators, may observe behaviors, learning patterns, and problem-solving abilities to recognize signs of giftedness.

Observe students who shows intense passions, experiences social/emotional challenges due to their advanced abilities, or unique hobbies that may be indicative of giftedness. Adults who observe a child’s abilities closely may be able to recognize gifted traits.

2. Research

Explore peer-reviewed studies, scientific research, and articles on giftedness to gain a deeper understanding of the topic and dispel common myths. Seek guidance from experienced teachers, school counselors, and gifted education specialists who have expertise in identifying and supporting gifted students. This can help you identify and uncover the hidden talented individuals.

3. Portfolio assessments

Gather samples of the person’s work, such as creative projects, essays, or research papers, to assess their depth of understanding and originality. Review a collection of a child or individual’s work in creative and artistic fields to assess their level of talent.

4. Strong Relationship and Trust

As said earlier, the true gifts of talented individuals often comes out only when you get closer to them. When you observe, research, assess, and find out someone may be gifted, you can consider forming a bond with them. Establishing trust and friendship will reveal their wonderful gifts, no matter how deep they’ve hidden them.

Conclusion

By combining these strategies and other methodologies, educators, psychologists, scientists, parents, and other people can effectively detect and reject misconceptions about giftedness. This will ensure that gifted individuals receive the appropriate support and opportunities to reach their full potential.
